DataWind starts retail with UniverCell and bundled BSNL Internet

BANGALORE, INDIA: DataWind Inc. maker of Aakash and Ubislate tablets today announced a retail partnership with Univercell to market the company's tablets.

The company has also announced that with the purchase of the Ubislate tablets 7Cz and Ubislate 3G7 tablet PCs, it will provide 12 months of free ulimited internet browsing with BSNL.

DataWind products which were primarily only available through ecommerce and direct to consumer channels such as TV home-shopping, will now be available inclusive of UbiSlate Tablet PCs and PocketSurfer smartphones off the shelf at UniverCell which has more than 500 retail outlets across soutjern India.

"We are delighted to find great strength in UniverCell as our retail partners. The initial market was 2.5lakhs and the online demand was quite high. Now our volume has increased, and we needed retail support. This relationship significantly expands our distribution by adding a significant player from the retail channel to support", said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, DataWind.

"Association with BSNL for bundled internet service to our customers is a major breakthrough. We're happy to see that our partner in connectivity-BSNL, shares our aspiration of ubiquitous connectivity for all. With affordable technologyand free internet, we are now one step closer in our quest of bridging the digital divide,"he added.

"Government of India has launched NOFN project through which internet will be available in every gram panchayat. With cheaper devices, penetration will be easy. So through this offer 258mb will be given free to the customer for 12 months," said RK Mishra, chief general manager, BSNL, Karnataka Circle.

"We're mandated with bringing the internet to the far reaches of this country. DataWind's technology and UniverCell's retail reach will help bring internet penetration to the next stage. We are pleased to partner with DataWind who have created the category of 'low cost tablets' in India. It would be our endeavour to provide Internet services uninterrupted to all the users," he added.

DataWind's web delivery platform offered on the UbiSurfer browser delivers a fast web experience. It targets customers with minimal income and the cost of the device can also be paid in installments at UniverCell.
