Usage of data on mobile and other hand-held devices has already surpassed the usage over traditional mediums like the desktop computer. But the saturation point of data usage is far from archived. The average smartphone user will consume a whooping 8.9 GB of data per month by 2021, according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report.

In 2026' people used about 1.4 GB of data, by a conservative estimate. This surge in data usage will primarily ride on the proliferation of smartphone penetration, across the world. The advent of new and faster technology such as 4G and LTE will also fuel the growth in data usage. The riding content with such high-speed technology and network would be HD video content and real-time gaming.

Industry experts say that better data network will also enable users to sync all their available devices, which will in turn increase data usage. LTE networks are moving toward supporting data speeds of up to 1 Gbps. On top of that, it is e pelted that more devices that support increased data speeds will enter mature markets, such as the U.S. and Japan, in the second half of 2016.

According to Ericsson's estimates, the Internet of Things (IoT) will surpass mobile phones as the greatest category of connected devices by 2018. This surge in data usage will also urge the businesses to create more sophisticated data analytics platforms.
