BANGALORE, INDIA: Greenpeace activists gathered outside Bharti Airtel’s headquarters in Gurgaon on June 1, 2011, to urge the telecom operator to take steps to reduce its carbon emissions and shift to renewable sources of energy to power its network operations. Press communication from Greenpeace said that close to 50,000 supporters have signed a petition asking Airtel to go clean.

If we look at the above news, Airtel is just one example. Today ICT sector contributes over 2 per cent to the total global carbon emissions. Ironically, the sector’s identity as a solution provider contrasts with its rising carbon footprint. In India, the ICT sector is responsible for around 10 per cent of the global ICT emission. With an annual projected growth rate of 12-16 per cent, this emission will grow significantly.

In this scenario, moving to green energy sources is not only the responsibility of the tech and telecom corporate entities, but also they should become the 'Green Ambassadors' in promoting Green Technology and energy.

As a first step towards this, CyberMedia has partnered with Greenpeace to promote Green IT and the usage of renewable energy among the ICT industry. Through this website (http://www.goinggreen.co.in/) we would like to bring all the latest happenings around the world on clean energy adoption and Green IT.

Also there is an opportunity for each and every individual who would like to be part of this green journey. Those who are interested to make this planet more environmental friendly, can take a 'Green Pledge'. We would not like to make this 'Green Pledge' a one-day affair as part of the Environment Day.

It is more of a cautious decision of the individual to be an environmental friend. There are several ways where an individual can do his/her bit to protect this planet. We have given a few to help take a decision. You can take the pledge and be part of the green revolution.

To begin a green journey log on to the new website. Also share your views on the green revolution with us at srinivasr@cybermedia.co.in.
