Cyber crimes a major threat to Kerala

KOCHI, INDIA: Even as Kerala is stepping up its combat against cyber crimes in the state by setting up cyber cells in all districts, the number of cyber crimes in God's Own Country is on the rise, said state DGP Jacob Punnoose.

Observing that the use of the computer for criminal purposes was on the increase he warned that the cyber space will be ruled by criminals, if we leave it unguarded.

While addressing a function here on Monday the DGP said the cyber crimes in the state have more than tripled in three years.

The cyber cell of the police, which was launched in 2007, had got around 3000 cases that year. In 2008, the number of complaints was 14,406, whereas up to December 1 this year it has touched 29,346. If this trend continues in 2010 the number of cyber cases would cross 50,000, he said.
