SAN JOSE, USA: Continuent, Inc., provider of commercial open source solutions for database replication and scale-out has announced support and enhancements to MySQL Server 5.1.30 GA release, the first 5.1 production version of the popular open source database.

MySQL 5.1.30 is recommended for use on production systems by the MySQL build team at Sun Microsystems.

"We welcome the new capabilities in MySQL 5.1, especially row replication. Row replication is particularly well-suited to replicating between MySQL and commercial databases like Oracle, as well as any replication problem that requires schema transformations. We have extended our Tungsten Replicator to read 5.1 binlogs in order to allow our customers to take advantage of these capabilities immediately," says Robert Hodges, CTO at Continuent.

Continuent Tungsten provides advanced replication for MySQL, including a number of specialized capabilities for MySQL 5.1 users:

* Solve problems that go beyond the capabilities of MySQL's row replication: handling of master failover in presence of multiple slaves for high availability, master/slave replication of one, some, or all databases, checksums on replication events, and flexible replication topologies.

* Provide heterogeneous replication: supply edge application data from core Oracle OLTP server by heterogeneous replication from an Oracle instance to and from MySQL with high fidelity and rapid transfer rates.

* Implement reliable, zero-downtime MySQL database migration and upgrades, such as online replication from MySQL 4.1/5.0 to 5.1, by applying upgrades to a replica instance and then promoting the upgraded copy to be a master. In addition to minimizing downtime, this approach provides a back-out in the event of migration problems.

"Row replication is used by most commercial databases, so the 5.1 release brings MySQL into line with other DBMS replication systems. Given the already low cost of ownership offered by MySQL and Continuent Tungsten, the new 5.1 product features plus Tungsten replication will be highly enabling for our customers," Hodges continues.
