ANALYST NOTE

"This was the first quarter in the last year where the global economy didn't dominate vendors' quarterly financial discussions, and while signs abound that the general economy is on the rebound, the content security gateway market is a couple of quarters ahead. In fact, this market has actually been up in the low double digits year-over-year for the first three quarters of 2009, and we project it to be up nearly 20 per centyear-over-year in the fourth quarter," explains Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

 -  Growth in the content security gateway market picked up in 3Q09, with worldwide revenue up 5 per cent sequentially to $571 million

 -  McAfee continues to lead in worldwide revenue share in the overall content security gateway market in 3Q09

 -  Blue Coat leads the appliance segment of the content security gateway space in terms of revenue, and Websense leads the software segment

 -  Almost all content security vendors increased their revenue in the single digits from the previous quarter

 -  In recent discussions with Infonetics analysts, most content security vendors focused on growth opportunities, hosted security/security as a service (SaaS), the changing threat landscape, smartphone protection, and social networks

 -  The North American content security gateway market is expected to pass the $1 billion mark for the first time in 2009
