1. Connect both PCs using a serial cable. Here one PC will act as a host and the other will be client. Note down which port (COM1 or COM2) you have connected the cable to,on each PC

2. Decide which PC would be host. For this, right click on 'My Network Places' and select 'Create New Connection' from the 'Network Tasks' list. It will start the 'New Connection' wizard

3. Select 'Set up an advanced connection' option and click on Next. Then select 'Connection directly to another computer' and go to the next step. Select 'Host' and click on Next again. Set the 'Connection device' to COM1 or COM2 as per step 1

4. On the Permission screen, you will get the list of usernames you have on your PCs. Select the users that you want to give access to and click on Next. To create a new user, click on the Add button. Finally click on Finish

5. If you want file and Internet sharing, right click on 'Incoming Connection' >Properties. Go to Networking>Internet Protocol and check on the 'Allow callers to access local network'  6. On the configuration screen, you can either use the network-default DHCP server to allocate an IP to the client or set up your own (with a custom IP range). Select as per your needs
7. On the client end, the procedure is the same as that for the host. But this time, on the 'Host & Guest' screen, just select the Guest option instead  8. Here specify the name of the host PC you want to connect to. In the 'Computer Name' text box type in the Host's name and click on Next and then on Finish
9. The above step will add new 'Direct connection' to your Network connections list. Double click on it and you will get a dial-up login screen. Give the user name and password in Step 4 and click on Connect 10. If you want to turn on the Windows firewall on this connection, right click on 'Direct connection' and go to Advanced tab. Select Settings under 'Windows Firewall' and set the firewall ON
