NEW DELHI, INDIA: Connected Cars and Homes are coming soon than we thought of. Mercedes, Ford, and GM all have have prominent roles at CES - but will they make the same mistakes as automotive titans in the past, Forrester asks.

“The automotive industry has over-invested in new car technology and underinvested in using mobile apps and services to build brand relationships with existing customers,” analyst Frank Gillett said.

“What I’ll be watching for are signs of the auto industry embracing the mobile mind shift, such as Ford did by adding specific features and support to Automatic’s product that improves the experience with cars already on the road, rather than only brand new cars.”

Gillett said to expect a “cacophony” of connected home announcements - with Samsung leading the way.

“Watch for Samsung to heavily feature the connected home in its keynote, as it seeks new sources of revenue to replace the decline in its smartphone sales. The connected home is evolving to being mobile-centric, creating convenience and ease, rather than just monitored security,” Gillett said.

“I expect SmartThings, acquired by Samsung in August, to announce new products, and a new roadmap that aligns with Samsung’s strategic goal of being a player in the connected home. Established players like Honeywell and Schlage, and aspiring startups like Wink, and Curb Energy will make the connected home topic one of the major themes of CES.”
