A number of factors have resulted in bringing current QA methodologies to this tipping point. These factors include: increased technical platform complexity, shifting customer expectations, iterative development methodologies (e.g. Agile) and a news business outlook on the true cost of bug discovery.

A growing trend of Community-Based Testing can be seen today, which responds to these issues. By leveraging an existing community of testers, software vendors are achieving higher quality software releases at significantly lower QA costs, while simultaneously improving the time-to-market of iterative software releases.

The benefits of Community Testing are especially noticeable in organizations that adhere to the Agile development process. A software release schedule is provided, based on a Case Study of a successful bi-weekly release cycle.
