NEW DELHI, INDIA: Following the allegation of NGO Green Peace that telecom giant Bharti Airtel had not revealed measures taken to lower its carbon emissions, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) on Saturday said it will come up with an emission reduction programme within three months.

"The COAI committed to develop a clear, detailed and sustainable emission reduction programme with realistic time frames for achievement and share this with Green Peace and other interested parties," said the association after a meeting with representatives from Green Peace.

According to the COAI, an effective programme for carbon emission reduction was a complex matter and required participation of all its member companies working together, especially the tower companies that managed their cell sites, towers and network infrastructure.

Individual efforts by member companies would often resulted in poor economies of scale and at worst, wasted investments and efforts in untried and unproven alternatives, it said.

The COAI also committed to engage a competent third party entity to assist its members with "best international practices" and provide independent verification of achievement of programmes and milestones within this time frame.

Rajan S. Mathews, director general COAI, emphasised that the use of diesel by the industry was not by choice. A large amount of operational expenditure was spent on running the network on diesel annually due to the shortage of grid power supply and limited availability of alternative energy sources.
