SAN FRANCISCO: Online technology news provider CNET Networks Inc. said
Wednesday that it launched a fee-based online technology learning and
certification training service called SmartPlanet.
Many Internet media companies, in response to a slowdown in advertising
spending, are seeking to make money through new fee-based services. The service
targets information technology and business professionals seeking to improve
their skill sets and advance their careers, the company said.
"SmartPlanet is just the kind of valuable resource our audience
expects," said CNET Networks media division president Barry Briggs.
"We attract millions of IT and business professionals to our sites each
month with information and commerce services that are essential to their
careers, helping them use technology effectively and make better buying
decisions."
The service, which is developed with online education partner Element K, will
be integrated throughout CNET's network of Web sites. It will offer more than
600 self-study and instructor-led courses, including categories such as Web
design and programming languages.
Shares of CNET rose 22 cents to $9.56 in early trading.
