According to the recent CII Study on 'Mapping of human resource skills in Tamil Nadu, the IT and ITeS industries would be among the primary growth engines of the State.

"By 2015, the IT industry in Tamil Nadu, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19 to 20 per cent, could reach the size of $17 to 20 billion, while the ITeS industry, with a CAGR of 22 to 23 per cent, could become a $10 to 12 billion industry," the study points out.

The report said that Tamil Nadu is set to emerge as the leading IT and ITeS state in India. The IT industry currently employs over 80,000 people in the state. Given the pace of growth, the industry will employ around 4.50 lakh people by 2015, it said. The ITeS segment, which currently employs around 65,000 people, is expected to generate about 3.50 lakh jobs by 2015.

The study has identified many key skill gaps in the IT and ITeS industry. In general, these industries lack people with strong business process understanding, analytical skills and learnability -- the ability to learn new applications quickly and to work with multiple teams in different geographies, states the report.

The study recommends the introduction of special training courses for arts and science graduates in the usage of computers, ITeS skills and product selling skills, to meet the increasing human resource requirements of the IT industries.
