Huawei, which competes on the global stage with the likes of Ericsson and Nokia Siemens, said that as part of his new role as CTO, Matt Bross would support the company's efforts in delivering products for North America, one of the markets Huawei has yet to significantly crack.

Bross was formerly chief technology officer of BT Group, and his appointment marks one of the most senior to date of a foreigner to Huawei, one of China's biggest success stories in terms of high-tech exports.

Huawei and hometown rival ZTE, both from the south China city of Shenzhen, cut their teeth as providers of low-cost telecoms equipment, first domestically and then to developing markets and finally to the most lucrative developed markets in the United States and Europe.

As their records improve, both companies have been trying to shed their image as providers of low-cost alternative products, with each making strong marketing pushes in both North America and Europe in recent years.
