CHENNAI: The Chennai City police have taken a novel way

to keep rumours of bomb threats away, by issuing an SMS to all mobile

subscribers in Chennai

The SMS read: “Spreading rumours was punishable under law. Indulging in such
mischievous campaigns would lead to de-activation of the mobiles.”

The SMS was sent to all the subscribers of CellOne,
Airtel, Aircel,

and Hutch

across Chennai city.

Highly placed police sources said that the counter-SMS campaign was to create
awareness among the public about rumour mongering, especially about bomb threats

in the wake of the police department arresting five militants who were planning

to implant bombs in various parts of Tamil Nadu on Independence Day.

Police departments in many cities are now looking at SMSes as a novel and
effective means of mass communication. The Bangalore police commissioner had

earlier reached out to mobile phone subscribers dispelling rumours about a

possible terror attack in the city. This SMS message came a few days after the

attack on IISc.
