Developed indigenously by CDOT, this technology will offer converged services over the fiber network. The centre also foresees the government’s ambitious fiber optic roll-out as an enormous opportunity for the entire telecom ecosystem.

Speaking to CIOL, Vipin Tyagi, director, CDOT said that the government has a role to play in providing connectivity to rural India through a long-term fiber creation. Tyagi believes that voice is saturating, though the broadband is in initial stage.

“More than 5 lakh kilometers of fiber has to be laid across the country. Providing connectivity at panchayat level with regional-language content at affordable price is critical,” he added.

CDOT believes that they need converged technology to support low-end services such as cable TV over fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network. “While we are focusing on IPTV, networks should also carry analogue. GPON can fulfill all services,” he said.

Tyagi added: "GPON works on light waves and requires low-power. It also supports iPv6." CDOT and BSNL have recently done a pilot in Ajmer where they provide services such as voice, Internet and IPTV over fiber.

“10 more similar projects are on a planning stage, and in a quarter’s time, we may announce them,” informed CDOT. GPON technology can integrate all services, while the government is banking on it to offer key national projects such as e-Governance, e-health and e-education to villages.
