ATHENS, USA: Carbon Mountain LLC has announced a new open source Platform for building next-generation data center solutions called inVrastructure.

Based on proven open source technologies, inVrastructure runs on any AMD or Intel platform supported by Linux. With today's announcement, Carbon Mountain is challenging Cisco, VMware and their partners by providing customers with a true open source Unified Computing solution.

Carbon Mountain's approach integrates compute, storage, network and virtualization resources into a centrally managed solution. The solution provides a web based interface that allows the IT professional to view exactly what is happening on their network with a single glance. The focus of that information can be adjusted from a global view all the way down to a specific hypervisor.

The solution enables the easy deployment of private clouds as well as the migration of existing IT deployments. Carbon Mountain has designed the system so that multiple data centers can be managed from a single interface. A single spare server is all that is needed to start migrating a traditional data center to a unified computing platform.

Carbon Mountain is further challenging Cisco's core business, as the inVrastructure solution moves advanced network capabilities to the hypervisor. The approach reduces the processing required by the network, by moving it to specialized hypervisors where the processing is done on-demand for specific applications.

The inVrastructure solution can integrate third party switches and routers, enabling the system to provide full control over networking resources.

The inVrastructure solution provides a software layer that eliminates the need for Application Delivery Controllers. This software layer provides advanced application delivery capabilities such as SSL Acceleration, Application Acceleration, Context-Aware compression, Link Optimization and Global Traffic Management.

The software layer is also capable of traditional load balancing capabilities such as algorithms, weighted servers, health checking and high availability. The solution enables these application delivery capabilities across multiple hypervisors, eliminating the need for an external controller.

"By moving Application Delivery capabilities into the hypervisor we can offer considerable cost savings to our customers" explained Shawn Wilson, CEO Carbon Mountain LLC. "ADCs offered by F5 Networks, Radware, Brocade and Cisco can cost tens of thousands of dollars per unit. The solution adds a level of network intelligence that no other virtualization company is offering today."

Carbon Mountain's inVrastructure solution makes the next-generation data center technology more accessible to businesses, given the current economic climate. The company plans to release two open source projects in May prior to shipping the inVrastructure product early in Q3 2009.
