Canon India focuses on govt space

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Canon India that offers consumer and office products has taken aggressive strategy in government domain. It expects to become an Rs 1 billion company by 2015. Canon has bagged various e-Governance projects as well as implementing ESI hospital modernization initiative.

The company said that it has been involved with many e-Governance projects such as Aadhaar for national biometric identity with UIDAI, biometric identity card initiative for coastal fishermen with BEL as integrator, Passport Seva Kendras across the country with TCS as SI, and biometric identity for employees registered with ESIC through Wipro as integrator.

Speaking to CIOL, K Bhashkar, director - OIS, Canon India said that the company has partnered with Wipro for providing SLR cameras and scanning devices across all locations for the project, Panchdeep. This has been initiated by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) under the Ministry of Labour and handles a data of 5 crore beneficiaries spread across more than 1500 offices and hospitals in the country.

Canon is also a part of the government's ambitious, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan that assists states for infrastructure development and facilitates ICT-enabled education.

“For Passport Seva Kendras, CIPL has provided high-end SLR cameras for remote capture of all individuals applying for passport as per defined standards,” he said.

Bhashkar informed that the company is also working for Rs 1011crore IT automation project, IVFRT (Immigration, Visa and Foreigners Registration and Tracking) envisaged by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The company is also working closely for Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) initiative. It facilitates collection, storage, retrieval, analysis, transfer and sharing of data and information among 14,000 police stations and district and state headquarters as well as other organization and agencies.

As a business strategy, the company is apparently banking heavily on government-driven projects. “Canon aims to be Rs 1 billion company by 2015. The government business would contribute at least 40 per cent from Canon's Office Imaging Solution (OIS) division,” informed Bhashkar.
