BANGALORE: National Multimedia Resource Centre (NMRC) of the Pune-based
Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is set to launch India's
first client-server multimedia repository called NMRC Portal. The portal is
expected to host and disseminate information on multimedia contents, skills,
products and technologies.
C-DAC executive director R.K. Arora said that the repository had various
categories of multimedia components such as images, audio/video/animation clips,
clipart collection, multimedia hardware and software tools and projects done by
students of C-DAC. The portal conceived and designed for multimedia content
creators, owners and users, can be accessed at http://nmrcportal.cdacindia.com.
.
Mr Arora said it also offers parametric searching over databases,
registration, feedback and content uploading facilities. These facilities would
be offered under two sections - multimedia bazar and multimedia dalan. The
former is a kind of market place where users would find information related to
multimedia while latter is a showcase for those interested in having a special
and exclusive presence on the portal.
The portal would have free access for a period ranging between six to twelve
months and looking at the response of the site, a nominal registration fee might
be charged, he said. Mr Arora said that total funding for the project has been
to the tune of Rs 1.8 crore of which about Rs 1.2 crore had been obtained from
the Central Government and remaining has been contributed by C-DAC.
C-DAC was also setting up an e-governance demonstration centre at the
Ministry of Information Technology, New Delhi, to showcase popular e-governance
applications for various States.
The next step in the parallel processing technology approach by C-DAC is
Param Anant, a low-cost super-computing platform. The key features of this
system are based on off-the-shelf components and support cluster of
microprocessors (CLUMPS), exploiting shared and distributed memory. It uses
PARAMnet as the high bandwidth System Area Network (SAN) and a wide range of
applications/kernels.
