BANGALORE, INDIA: Chief information officer (CIO) has always been relegated to IT and data centres, which were not considered as critical to businesses. However, today with technologies such as virtualization, cloud and SDN coming into mainstream, the role of a CIO is also undergoing a change, as IT has become an important and integral element in an enterprise' growth.

"Cloud is bringing so much of a disruptive change that one one hand, while CEOs and CFO are getting involved in decisions that were traditionally considered as IT decisions, on the other, CIOs are being involved in business decisions," noted T Srinivasan, MD, VMware India & SAARC.

He was speaking on, 'How cloud is remodelling Businesses," during the first day of C-Change 2013 event, here.

In 2012, 60 per cent of applications are all virtualized and going forward, about 90 per cent of applications will be virtualized. Moreover, the future will be about SDN for everything to be made available fast, hybrid cloud, for anytime access and end-user computing for any device. And, CIOs will have a larger role to play in such a context.
