BANGALORE: With fake resumes still floating unchecked, the IT/ITeS sectors here are taking no chances.

The firms in these sectors are sending the certificates of job aspirants to the Verification Department of the Bangalore University (BU) to check the veracity of the candidates’ educational background.

However, even after many steps -- including police cases -- taken to address the cases of fake resumes, the menace continues unabated. The Verification Department has found many cases of fake resumes.

The department was primarily concerned with requests from government-affiliated organizations. But with the spurt in IT firms in and around the city, it has been receiving requests for verification from private companies too on a regular basis.

It receives hundreds of such degree certificates from the police, human resources department in Delhi, private companies, consulates, embassies and foreign Universities.

With many aspirants eager to enter the lucrative industry, the IT firms here are inundated with resumes, which render them helpless to crosscheck the credentials. The verification department does it for a fee of Rs 150 per certificate.

Recently, the department received 65 cases from Pakistan. Candidates from a South Indian State had applied for jobs in that country. On verification, it was found only a few of them held genuine BPharma and MPharma certificates.

L Sangamitra, superintendent, Verification Department, Bangalore University, said, “Nine to ten per cent of the total certificates received from different sectors for verification are fake. These days we receive lot of requests from IT and ITeS companies for the candidates’ degree verification.”

Sources said anyone could procure fake certificates for a few thousands of rupees. The Verification Department, however, cannot take legal action against those holding fake certificates. It can only vouch whether the certificates are genuine or not.

One of the main reasons for fake certificates being circulated is due to the lack of legal action being taken, as the sources in most cases are anonymous. Further, for every such fraud case, they have to file a case with the police, which again is a tedious process.

The University Grants Commission of India has declared 19 institutions illegal, which include, Maithili University, Darbanhga (Bihar Province); JagatPuri, Delhi; Commercial University Limited, Dariyaganj, Delhi; Badarganavi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, Gokak, Beilgaon (Karnataka); National University of Electro Complex Homoeopathy, Kanpur; Vocational University, Delhi.

Fake degree certificates racket is nothing new and has been around for years. In the past, with few rackets exposed in financial, IT, ITeS and Insurance sectors, verification of the candidate’s background has been accelerated.

However, according to E Abraham Mathew, CEO of CyberMedia Dice, a technology-focused job board, instances of fake resumes is not a new issue.

“It has been prevalent since 2000 when the IT and dotcom boom started. The incidence of such instances since then is roughly the same. They haven't increased,” he told CyberMedia News recently.

Meanwhile, in a bid to check the menace of submitting false resumes and similar breach of integrity, IT consulting firm MindTree Consulting had come out with a book, All About Integrity.

IT major Wipro had earlier this year filed police complaints against a few HR outfits, which forwarded fake resumes, besides showing the door to employees who had fudged with their resumes.
