NEW DELHI: UTStarcom, Inc. has announced that it has been awarded a contract valued at $9.2 million for deployment of its AN2000 IB and AN-2000 B-100 IP-based digital subscriber line access multiplexer (DSLAM) platforms and related equipment for the second phase of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd's (BSNL) national Internet backbone project.
This is the second contract to be awarded to UTStarcom after the $8.2 million contract with BSNL for its Total Control 1000 multiservice access platform and related equipment, with the total amounting to $17.4 m.
BSNL's National Internet Backbone is a TCP/IP-based network currently comprising around 400 nodes distributed across India and supporting over one million subscribers with PSTN and ISDN Internet Access Services. The second phase of the project includes rollout of a broadband access network across 198 cities in India to provide reliable high-speed Internet connectivity and other value-added services and applications. UTStarcom's IP-DSLAM platform is a key enabler for BSNL's triple play services strategy.
"Triple play, or provision of voice, data and video services on a converged network, is of particular importance in today's intensely competitive global telecom industry. It is the path being adopted by leading telecommunications service providers worldwide to diversify service portfolios and increase average revenue per user," said country manager and director of south Asia operations at UTStarcom, Ruchir Godura.
"UTStarcom's IP-DSLAM solution will enable BSNL to offer new broadband-based triple play services, such as high-speed Internet access, multimedia messaging, interactive gaming, and video on demand, that will increase subscriber revenues and speed the operator's return on investment," he added.
