BSNL net profit declines in 2008-09

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Indian telecom major BSNL posted a net profit of Rs. 574.85 crores on total revenue of Rs. 35811.92 crores for the year 2008-09. The profit of BSNL has declined during the current financial year mainly on account of increase in employees cost due to implementation of pay commission recommendations and decline in revenue of fixed line services, said a press release.

However, BSNL has increased its revenue by more than 90 per cent in Broadband Services and witnessed a healthy growth in revenue in the leased line segment.

In the current financial year BSNL has taken various new initiatives such as launching of 3G Services, Blackberry Services, Managed Network Services for SME and large enterprise customers and other customer centric initiatives to provide better customer care and complete range of services.

It has also decided to share its towers and infrastructure with other mobile operators thus opening a new stream of income.

BSNL has also signed MOUs with various international operators including British Telecom, Cable and Wireless, PCCW, Hong Kong and NTT Japan to provide VPN connectivity to its customers worldwide, the release added.
