Brookfield tower in Schindler's list with RFID-packed, intuitive lifts

MORRISTOWN, USA: Schindler Elevator Corporation has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by Brookfield Multiplex Construction to provide and install six escalators and 32 elevators at Bay Adelaide East Tower & Podium, a new 44-story commercial tower in Toronto that is expected to be completed in 2015.

It will offer 980,000 square feet of LEED Platinum space, where professional services firm Deloitte will be the anchor tenant. Schindler will also maintain the elevators and escalators at the building.

Moving occupants faster and more efficiently throughout the building will be Schindler 7000 custom passenger elevators equipped with Schindler's PORT Technology destination-dispatching system, which functions as a two-way communication interface between occupants and the building's environment. The system optimizes traffic flow throughout the building while offering, predictive call entry and personalized service.

The technology's patented access control uses RFID technology to play a significant role in managing and controlling access within the building. At Bay Adelaide, this technology will allow occupants to use pre-programmed access cards to generate an automatic elevator assignment, allowing advanced access control and customized mobility throughout the building. The system offers a building security system seamlessly integrated with elevator access control at every floor.

As added, each PORT terminal's proximity sensor tells it when to be active and at all other times puts it into low energy consumption mode.

When the terminal screen illuminates, an ambient light sensor determines only the brightness level required, again optimizing energy usage. The technology also helps ensure elevator trips are as efficient as possible. This produces a very resourceful use of energy even during heavy traffic.

It is claimed that Schindler 7000 elevators use highly efficient motors and feature Power Factor 1 drives that reduce energy consumption by up to 35% compared to standard drives and regenerate energy back into the building's electrical system. The recovered energy can be used to power other building demands such as lighting, air conditioning or other equipment. The Power Factor 1 drive generates less heat, providing additional savings through reduced cooling requirements for the machine room.
