MUMBAI, August 27 : BPL Mobile has entered
into strategic tie-ups with four operators to offer automatic roaming all
over the US to its subscribers. The four US mobile phone service operators
are Omnipoint, Powertel, Aerial and Voice Stream.
The key factor in providing 'RoamFree' service in the US
is the conversion of frequencies from India's mobile standard (GSM 900) to
the standard prevalent in the US (PCS 1900). To enable this conversion
between frequencies, BPL Mobile has appointed Teleglobe, Canada. By the
end of next month, BPL Mobile plans to tie up with Bell PCS in Canada and
Carolina and Microcell Connexions in Canada to enhance its reach in the US
and Canada.
All BPL Mobile subscribers subscribing to RoamFree
International can avail of the facility of roaming in the US. Prior to
leaving for the states, the subscribers can rent or purchase a tri-band
mobilephone from any of the BPL Mobile galleries, said a company
spokesperson.
