The initiative taken by BPL Mobile is based on macro cell technology, a unique network that rests on an intelligent network that was installed in Maharashtra and Goa this month.

Chief Operating Officer for Maharashtra & Goa, B P Singh said the macro cell technology helped to pin point geographical areas and the most frequently visited places by subscribers. Hence a city could be divided into zones based on the maximum time spent in and around a particular location. Presently, BPL Mobile has identified four zones —Campus Zone, Workzone, Playzone and Funzone.

The mots Zone card offers calling rates of 2 paise per minute to any phone in the Maharashtra and Goa circle. The subscribers can also make calls at one paise per second in the zone with the GSM pack. Users can also enjoy local and national SMS at 25 paise from within and outside the zone. The calls outside the zone will be charged at the normal rates.

BPL Mobile currently has a subscriber base of 24 lakh subscribers across four circles. In Maharashtra and Goa circle, the company has crossed the 5-lakh subscriber base mark. The company has invested Rs 500 crore to upgrade the network. Over 485 cell sites have been added in the last six months including 100 cell sites in Maharashtra alone. Another 220 sites have been planned in Maharashtra with 40 cell sites expected to be added in Pune. The company has also commissioned three new switching centers.
