The goal is to reduce Blue Coat product waste destined for landfills by as much as 90 percent, as well as to generate cost savings. It is projected that proceeds from the recycling and reuse program will not only cover the costs of the service, but could generate up to $750,000 annually in additional operational savings.

“Blue Coat is committed to environmental leadership, through reducing our carbon footprint, limiting the consumption of natural resources and significantly reducing landfill waste,” said Dave Cox, Senior VP—Operations, Blue Coat Systems. “The new Blue Coat Product Recycling Service substantially reduces materials going into landfill, makes disposal issues convenient for customers, creates a larger supply of spare parts and reduces our operational costs. It is another example of how corporate social responsibility makes great business sense,” added Cox.

As customers replace older Blue Coat appliances with new ones that offer greater functionality and capacity with lower power consumption, Blue Coat wants to ensure the reuse and recycling of the replaced appliances to the greatest extent possible. At the same time, through recovery and refurbishment of many of the components, Blue Coat will be better equipped with spare parts on hand to meet service requirements for older equipment still in use.

The Blue Coat Product Recycling Service is an integral component of the company's BluePlanet initiative, which is designed to reduce the company's environmental impact, save operational costs and educate employees to decrease their own carbon-footprints and resource consumption. This innovative recycling service resulted from an employee suggestion, reflecting the successful educational and collaborative nature of the BluePlanet program.

Blue Coat will supply customers with prepaid shipping containers to return Blue Coat products back to a central collection point. Components from these products will be refurbished and then reused as spare parts to support other customers. It is anticipated that most remaining items will be reclaimed by electronics and metals recyclers.
