CALIFORNIA: The maker of BlackBerry smartphones has assured India of giving access to its messenger service and is working to address the government's security worries, a senior security official said on Friday.

India has given Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry, until Aug. 31 to comply with a request to gain access to encrypted corporate email and messaging services or those services will be shut.

"They have assured access to messenger and said they are working on solutions on the whole issue," the Indian official said after a meeting with BlackBerry officials in New Delhi.
