Bharti seeks Rs 145 cr refund

NEW DELHI: A wholly-owned unit of Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd, India's leading integrated telecom firm, is returning four fixed-line permits and seeking a $32 million refund from the government, the company informed.

Bharti Infotel Ltd said in a statement that it was surrendering its licenses for Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu after the government introduced a unified permit policy for mobile and basic phone services last year.

"Bharti has sought refund of the entry fee amounting to Rs 145 crore ($32 million) paid at the time of acquisition of these licenses," the statement said.

Bharti Tele-Ventures is India's second largest provider of mobile services. It offers wireless, fixed-line, national long distance and overseas calls facilities to more than eight million customers.
