NEW DELHI: BenQMobile may set up a manufacturing unit in India next year.

BenQ had proposed to set up a manufacturing facility in the country in 2004. It
sent a delegation to Chennai to look into the facilities available, but stalled

further action following its tie-up with Siemens.

G. Prasanna Kumar, business head, Sales and Marketing Communications, BenQ India
Pvt. Ltd. said that the company had planned to set up the facility in Chennai

but had temporarily dropped the idea.

“We are serious about setting up the manufacturing unit in India, but not this
year. We might come up with this plan next year,” he told CyberMedia News.

Speaking about the newly launched BenQ-Siemens handsets Boris Chang, head,
Business Development and Strategy Communications, BenQ, said that it is the

first time any brand has launched mobile handsets with Organic Light Emitting

Diodes (OLED) screens. Chang was optimistic about the prospects of this product

with features of MP3, radio and mega pixel camera with the OLED screen.

“We have set a target of three per cent for this year as we have launched in
the middle of the month. With our additional features with attractive price

range we will be able to tap good market space soon,” Chang said. He said that

they have launched mobiles from low-end to high-ends suiting the preferences of

the Indian customers.

The company plans to focus on East, West and North India currently. “Eastern
India is one of our prime markets for our handsets till now. We will be present

in the two tier and three tier cities through the existing network of both BenQ

and Siemens,” Kumar said. However, also it plans to set up its office in the

Pune to target customers in South India.

Speaking about their target on the rural market, he said that they have launched
the A 38 model, which would be available in the market in a couple of months'

time. He said that the price of the handset would be around Rs.2700, making it

affordable for the rural market.
