BenQ to set up R&D center in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Taiwanese IT company BenQ Corporation is looking at India as a global resource base and plans to set up an R&D center in Mumbai. The center will employ at least 50 personnel initially, which will be increased over a period of time.

"We would look at India as a global resource base, particularly for knowledge who would aid us develop embedded capital software for our digital lifestyle products," said BenQ CEO KY Lee.

He was on a tour of BenQ offices in the Asian and Middle Eastern markets to announce business strategies for the company's growth in 2005. "BenQ's R&D puts the technical muscle behind its design strength. Today, eight R&D centers around the region contribute to the development of 10 product lines featuring over 420 products," Lee said.

The company has set a global target of $10 billion in revenue by 2008. According to Lee, the success of BenQ's approach is reflected in increased marketshare and sales for products ranging from Joybook multimedia notebook computers to Joybee MP3 players, to mobile phones and popular, industry-leading lines of scanners, LCD projectors and flat-screen monitors.

BenQ also announced a channel strategy called 'DEEP'. The name refers to the four interlocking aspects of the company's performance: Design - Use of innovative technology and head-turning aesthetics; Efficiency - Via economies of scale and highly productive supply chains; Experience - Strengthening every point of contact with customers, whether that is through BenQ's products, branding or people; Preference - Bringing cool, high quality products to market at the right price and making BenQ the preferred brand for communications, computing and consumer-electronics products.
