NEW YORK: BEA Systems Inc. on Monday announced an alliance with US computer
services company EDS Corp., as BEA moves to defend its turf in the application
server market from fierce competition by International Business Machines Corp .
Under the terms of the EDS-BEA pact, the companies will develop an integrated
package of BEA's WebLogic platform and EDS' e-business infrastructure.
BEA is a leader in application servers, pieces of software that form a base
for developers to build their applications. IBM has chipped away at BEA's
application server lead in recent years with high-profile customer wins like
eBay Inc.
According to Giga Information Group, BEA is expected to barely keep its No. 1
market share ranking for such servers, with 36 per cent, while IBM's share is
expected to grow to 34 per cent, from 31 per cent last year.
BEA and EDS said on Monday they will cooperate with training, marketing and
sales programs for integrated systems based on BEA's platform.
