Bangalore is among the top 25 high-tech cities of the world according to the research firm 2thinknow that studied a list of 85 cities across the globe and ranked them on 10 factors related to technological advancement - including the number of patents filed per capita, startups, tech venture capitalists, ranking in other innovation datasets, and level of smartphone use.
Bangalore came in at the 19th place ahead of Berlin, Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The analysis put San Francisco, the ‘Silicon Valley’, at No. 1 spot, with its population of designers, programmers, start-up culture and venture capital scene.
Hailing the city's achievement and growth Karnataka's industries & infrastructure minister RV Deshpande said, “In 1997, when no one spoke about information technology, not even the Union government, we brought out the first IT policy .There were, of course, reservations but we went ahead and created an exclusive department for information technology . This helped develop an eco system and get institutions such as IIIT-B. All these factors helped."
“Bangalore, as a city , is technology-friendly and adapts to changes easily and fast. Being a tech hub also enabled the city to become one of the best innovation eco systems in the world," state's IT & tourism minister Priyank Kharge said.
New York came in second followed by London and Los Angeles. As per data from the New York state comptroller’s office, nearly 7,000 high-tech companies provided more than 100,000 jobs during the third quarter of 2013. 2thinknow found London has more startups and programmers than almost any other city in the world. By some estimates, there may be more IT jobs in London than all of California.
