BANGALORE: US-based back up software solutions provider, BakBone Software, has commenced its Indian operation this week by opening a liaison office in Mumbai. "India is a big market. Although the backup storage market is still in the infancy stage, it is expected to grow at 20 percent per annum in the country. We plan to capture 20 percent of the market, currently estimated to be in the size of $6 million, within the next two years," said the company’s Managing Director for Asia Pacific, Howard Weiss.

The decision to set up the Indian operation comes in the wake of the company acquiring eight clients including Nokia and Sify.com. It has also appointed Bangalore based Sthlief Master and Mumbai based ESS Infotech as Value Added Reseller (VAR). The company is also looking for VARs in Hyderabad, Chennai and Delhi. It has formed a strategic partnership with CMS computers to distribute and market its product. It plans to have roughly 25 to 30 VARs in the country within the neext six months.

"We are here to provide support to our customers through our partners and give them assurance that we are here for any immediate assistance. So our core objective in India is to form the right alliances, develop channels and market through partners," added Weiss.

As for investment, failing to give a definitive number, Weiss said that investment in India would be in people, training, marketing, seminars, events and road shows, so the investment is fairly "big".

Primarily targeting the insurance and finance in India with its enterprise class storage management (backup and recovery) software, NetVault, BakBone is preparing to face the future challenges such as NAS market, Linux, application backup and Small and Medium Businesses.
