Avtar Saini appointed joint chief of Intel South Asia

BANGLORE: Intel has announced that Avtar Saini would join Atul Vijaykar to lead its South Asia operations. The two of them will jointly manage the activities for the next few quarters. Atul Vijaykar will relocate back to the US by mid 2000, said an Intel release.



Saini has been with Intel for 17 years. He was a micro architect / logic designer on the Intel 486 processor. In 1989, he co-lead the Pentium processor design team where he managed the chip design and its eventual ramp into volume production. In 1994, he was promoted to General Manager, Santa Clara Microprocessor Division, managing the development of Intel's next generation 64-bit architecture. In 1996, he moved to Folsom, California to head the Platforms Components Division where he was responsible for the Chipsets and Graphics solutions for the Intel Architecture platform. In 1997, Avtar Saini was appointed Vice President, Computing Enhancement Group.



Saini holds seven patents for his work in microprocessor design. Intel also announced the setting up of the Intel India Development Center located in Bangalore. Avtar Saini will additionally head the activities of this Center. The Development Center will initially include two software development teams, which will work with the Platform Components Group (PCG) and the Information Technology Group (IT) of Intel in the USA.
