PARIS: Apple Computer Inc., Chief Executive Steve Jobs said that the company had launched three new laptop computers before the key holiday selling season.

The new machines will be faster and better-equipped versions of existing laptops with 12-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch screens, Jobs said during a keynote speech at the Apple Expo.

The company also launched a wireless mouse and keyboard for its laptops.

The 12-inch laptop sells for a base price of $1,599 and also 1,599 euros, the 15-inch model for $1,999 and 1,999 euros and the 17-inch version at $2,999 dollars and 2,999 euros.

They have faster processors, more memory, better graphics cards and better connectivity to cameras, video recorders and other peripherals than earlier models, Jobs said. They will all have CD burners inside.

Jobs said 42 percent of its computer sales are portable models versus an industry average of 24 or 25 percent.

He said he hoped sales of portable computers will soon equal its sales of desktop computers.

"I think we can see that happen in the not-too-distant future," Jobs said. "This is clearly the year of the notebook for Apple."
