BANGALORE: American Power Conversion (APC) has announced that it has joined
Microsoft Corp., to assist in the development of the Windows 2000 operating
system (OS) by developing a two-tiered uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
management that is built into the operating system.
APC has built basic support for industry UPSs into Windows 2000.
Additionally, the new OS incorporates enhanced management functionality for
customers using Windows 2000 and APC UPSs, enabling them to enjoy extensive UPS
power management functionality via the operating system. This APC/Microsoft
developmental relationship helps increase the overall reliability and
availability of Windows 2000-based desktops, workstations and servers.
"APC expertise in power protection and management is
well respected across the industry and synonymous with quality, reliability and
functionality. Partnering with APC to incorporate advanced power management
functionality in Windows 2000 augments options for protection through
customizable and flexible power management and monitoring features", said
product manager for Windows 2000 Sundar Balasubramaniam. "We are certain
that our customers will notice the benefits of this joint initiative between APC
and Microsoft through higher levels of system reliability and availability for
their key business processes," he added.
In this latest collaboration, APC has developed the UPS tab
in the Windows 2000 Power Management Control Panel. According to a press release
issued by the company, this two-tiered UPS support will be standard on all four
versions of the Windows 2000 CD - Professional, Server, Advanced Server and
Datacenter Server. The Windows 2000 UPS tab provides improved basic support for
most manufacturers’ UPSs, including unattended operating system shutdown in
the event of an extended power outage as well as power warnings and event
logging. Additionally, Microsoft has included a more advanced driver in the
operating system, providing enhanced management for APC UPSs.
