CHENNAI: Anna University recently signed an MoU with Dishnet to provide

web-based Post Graduate courses. Under this, the ETH Research Lab, which is a

sister concern of Dishnet, will provide the web server for the University to

post its materials as well as undertake content development.

Prof A Kalanidhi, Vice Chancellor, Anna University, said, "Since Dishnet
has a network of services in Chennai as well as Pune, an alliance with them

would prove very useful. Dishnet has data centers at these places, and each is

connected to VSNL's international gateway." Dishnet will also be helping

Anna University's teachers to web-enable the materials prepared by them.

The PG courses are targeted at teachers of technical institutions. All study
materials will be posted on the net with each student being assigned a password.

CD ROMs and other audio-visual methods will be employed. Contact classes will be

conducted as well. Examinations will be conducted either at Anna University or

at a recognized center. "If there are a number of non-Chennaiites who

register for the course, then we will think about starting contact classes

outside Chennai," said Kalanidhi.

Anna University currently has 100 terminals at its computer lab. "We are
making arrangements for students to browse the Net here and use the study

material. There will be teachers here to help them out. We are also organizing

interactive sessions between the teachers and students through the net, through

chat or video, etc," said Kalanidhi.

The courses offered are ME in Computer Science, Electronics, Electrical
Engineering, Structural Engineering and Refrigeration Engineering. Short term

courses will also be available from January 2000. The duration of the ME

programs could be from 2 1/2 to 8 years and are to be launched in July 2000. A

credit-based program is also to be launched wherein students can earn credits

through short term courses for ultimately completing MS and Ph D program.
