NEW DELHI: The state-wide WAN across Andhra Pradesh has become operational, bringing it closer to Chandrababu Naidu's Vision 2020, which aims at providing transparency and accountability in the state by 2020.

Popularly known as APSWAN, the project has linked the state secretariat to all the 23 district headquarters besides Vijaywada and Tirupathi through a 2Mbps link in its first phase. The second phase envisages the project to expand to include all the mandal or taluk offices to enable speedy interaction between the capital and the districts as well as the between the districts.

The project has been undertaken by United Telecom Ltd. (UTL) on a build, own, operate basis for a period of five years and one month. The company has already invested around Rs 22 crore so far. The state government will pay Rs 1.10 crore per quarter over a period of five years to UTL in return for the expenditure of the infrastructure, maintenance and operation of the network which will be the responsibilty of UTL.

The project essentially links the LAN at the district headquarters to the LAN at the secretariat for data transfer. While for the voice communication the PABX exchange at the headquaters at Hyderabad has been linked to the district headquarters through the linked numbering systems.

Another facility enabled through the WAN is video conferencing from the headquarters with any district level officers on a one-to-one basis or a broadcast node from one-to-many.
