AMD ships 750 MHz Athlon

AMD regained bragging rights in the microprocessor market this week with the shipment of its new 750 megahertz Athlon processor. Intel’s fastest chip is a Pentium III running at 733 megahertz. AMD said Compaq and IBM are among the computer makers that will be using the new chip. At the retail level PCs with the 750 megahertz Athlon are available starting at around $1999, including a 17-inch monitor. The new AMD chip will sell for $799. A 533 MHZ version of the K6-2 chip is now available for just $167.
