AMD has announced that it has selected AMD Duron as the brand name for its new family of processors for value conscious business and home users. The Duron processor, which will be equivalent to a Cekeron processor, is derived from the AMD Athlon processor core and features full-speed, on chip L2 cache memory, a 200 MHz front side system bus, and enhanced 3DNow! technology. AMD plans to begin shipping AMD Duron processors in June.

Derived from the Latin roots ‘durare,’ meaning ‘to last,’ and ‘-on’, meaning ‘unit,’ the AMD Duron processor name was selected because it conveys the attributes embodied by a product designed to prolong the life of a buyer's investment.

"In choosing the AMD Duron product name, AMD wanted to convey the qualities that will prolong the life of the buyer's investment, specifically: dependability, reliability and stability," said Rob Herb, Executive VP, AMD. "The AMD Duron processor will be a workhorse without peer--invigorating AMD's competitive posture in the value market."
