AMD to focus on laptops, tablets

NEW DELHI, INDIA: With notebooks and tablets powering the PC segment, Chipmaker AMD is all set to tap the rapidly growing notebook market and plans to launch innovative and affordable chipsets catering to the Indian market.

In a press conference held here on Thursday, Ravi Swaminathan, managing director, AMD India said, “There is a growing market for laptops and tablets, and the company is serious about these segments.”

AMD is currently focusing on design and architecture and said that India will remain it is centre for excellence. With centers in Hyderabad and Bangalore, the company is looking at extending design capabilities in India, he said.

David Kenyon, corporate vice president, Worldwide Channel Marketing, AMD said, “ We started the year with the launch of the AMD C- and E-Series APUs which was met with resounding success. The market quickly embraced the recently launched AMD A-Series APU and the series has already started creating excitement for new platforms currently hitting shelves. ”

He added that that they are working with their OEM partners to bring to the market the most innovative and affordable technologies, to not only help them bridge the digital divide but to also address the changing needs of consumers.

"AMD's graphics and breakthrough computing technologies, including the APU, are leading the next era of vivid digital experiences for 'GenY', a major segment of AMD's target audience. India is a high growth market and occupies a critical role in AMD's global strategy," Kenyon said.

AMD intros 'Future is Me' campaign

Besides AMD also launched of a new contest 'Future is Me' targeting the youths of the country.

The four-month long contest features four categories namely music, entertainment, digital and fashion. The best entry in each of the four categories would be awarded with a cash prize worth Rs 1lakh and a brand new laptop.

Swaminathan, added that they are focusing on schools, colleges and coffee shops in a large number of cities and will reach at national level.

The idea behind this is to get active youth engagement, informed the company. AMD, though is still working out on a model to decide whether it would be an idea-based or design-oriented contest.

The company has also roped in various celebrities as jury members for this contest. It includes Ayaan Ali Khan, classical musician, Ankita Shorey, Miss India International 2011, Jacqueline Farnandes, Bollywood actress and Neeraj Roy, MD and CEO, Hungama Digital.
