AMD opens design center in India

BANGALORE: The second largest chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices, has opened a development center in India's Silicon City, Bangalore. The center, a wholly owned subsidiary of AMD, would engage in the engineering design work for the chip giant. The center to be opened in July 2004, will hire 40 engineers this year and expects to ramp up the team to 120 by the end of 2005. A full—fledged product from the AMD India Engineering Center, would be rolled out in the next 3 years according to Gopal Krishna, Strategic Development Manager, AMD India Engineering Center.

"The AMD India Engineering center enhances our commitment to customer centric innovation by establishing a strong presence in the emerging markets of South East Asia. We have aggressive goals to enhance our 64-bit micro processor offerings and bring advance technologies to the largest number of customers around the world," said Ajay Marathe, Corporate Vice President, IT, Global Supply Management and President of AMD India.

"The combination of outstanding engineering talent and cost advantages make Bangalore an optimal place to locate a new design facility," said Randy Allen, Vice President -Engineering for AMD's computation products groups.

The engineering center will also support AMD's emerging markets business, development efforts through system level design work carried out in conjunction with AMD's global engineering teams. The company joins its arch rival Intel and Texas Instruments in having a design and development center in Bangalore, India.
