AHMEDABAD: Gujarat lagged way behind in private colleges compared to states like Maharashtra and Karnataka. For this reason, the students had to migrate to these states and by the time they graduated, the exodus to other countries began. The old generation production economy, therefore, could never be replaced by the modern service economy.

Service mentality never sprouted in a state and the IT trend may break this jinx. As per provision of section 2 of the UGC Act, DAIICT would not take any grant from the state government or center, UGC or AICTE. It is bound to follow the state directions and a government nominee would be a member of the Board of Governors. The government has allocated 50 acres of land as a token for setting up this university.

At present, Gandhinagar based DAIICT offers post graduation courses since the last three years and shortly it is likely to start specialized courses. If the status kick-starts a new beginning, the government may also upgrade some other institutions to the university status.
