HYDERABAD: Amazon.com, one of the leading online shopping sites, is on an aggressive hiring spree. The Seattle-based company that has its only development center in India in the Asia Pacific region aims at tapping the high-end engineering talent for creating innovative customer-centric products.

"We are here primarily because of the smart talent available. We have our development center being set up in Bangalore. But if we feel the talent exists in other locations we will consider those locations too," said Amazon.com CTO Werner Vogels. Reluctant to give the exact numbers as far as manpower is concerned, he said, "Half of the products are developed outside the US. And India has got smart developers that we are looking for. We can double or triple the manpower base and we can hire as many as we can."

Elaborating on the industry-academia initiatives, Vogels said, "In Amazon we call it development but in reality we do research. For some areas we need to collaborate with the academia or research labs that already have the research knowledge. In India too, this is the area where we want to move into. So, when we are collaborating with the academia, it's a collaboration with the product theme groups sitting in Bangalore and the institute."

"Presently, we are talking about the collaboration possibilities with IIT-B. And of course, we are interested in expanding it to other universities in India too," Vogels added.

With an employee base of around 9,000 worldwide, Amazon has a number of areas like research, web services, personalization, etc. The Indian center has two product groups working on research and web services.

"The teams in Amazon own the complete ownership of the product right from the product definition, all the way to building the application, taking customer feedback and making necessary innovation. The teams in Bangalore run their services or products as part of the overall Amazon offering," informed VP of the Amazon India development center, Bharat Vijay.
