BANGALORE: System-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) solution leader, Altera Corporation, has made a direct investment in India by opening a office, Altera Semiconductor India Private Limited, six years after entering the country to sell its solutions through its distributor Arrow India. Achieva Components is the other distributor of Altera in India. The new office will provide pre and post sales and also offer technical support to Altera’s customers in India.

"This is the first step of investing and utilising India’s resources and capitalising on the growing market. A research and development center or engineering center or pure development center is certainly not on the cards in the immediate future but we will surely make the best use of opportunities and look for a possible development center if needed," said Altera’s Asia Pacific VP sales, Ben Lee.

In the past one year Asia Pacific has grown over 100 percent in revenue contribution to the company, presently constituting 18 percent of the revenue and is expected to cross the 20 percent this year. To this, India is said to have grown over 10 folds in the past six years of existence in terms of sales and market penetration. Altera has over 100 customers in India and over 14,000 worldwide. It targets telecommunications, automotive, industrial automation and consumer electronics verticals. C-DOT, Wipro, Deccanet, MindTree are some of Altera’s customers in India.

The company has two kinds of partnership programs worldwide, Altera Consultant Alliance Partners (ACAP) and Altera Mega-functions Partner Program (AMPP). Iwave, Spectrum Infotech and Dexel are ACAPs in India while the company is yet to establish an AMPP in the country.
