NEW DELHI, September 7: The Department of Space is confident that there

will not be any Y2K related problems in the operation of the satellites,

on-board systems, mission control facilities at Hasan, ground support

systems and launch facilities including vehicles. According to Department

of Space Chairman Dr Kasturirangan, the entire INSAT series is now being

serviced by Y2K compliant ground systems. He also said that the INSAT and

IRS series of satellites are confirmed to be Y2K compliant. The launch

vehicles, i.e. PSLV and GSLV have been tested and found to be Y2K

compliant. The ground segment consisting of the check out and launch

operation support systems at Sriharikota have been assessed and made Y2K

compliant by carrying out necessary rectification and validation.

It should be recalled that the Department of Space initiated the

necessary measures to address the Y2K problem in June 1998. The review by

the High Level Action Force on Monitoring the Impact of Y2K problem

indicates that Indian space program is fully geared up to face the Y2K

challenge. The Task Force is undertaking an in-depth review of the

position in eleven critical sectors, i.e. power, telecom, defense, civil

aviation, railways, petroleum, ports, banking, insurance, space and atomic

energy.
