Alibaba to help Indian SMEs promote products

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Alibaba.com, a small business e-commerce company, will host the third edition of the India offline sourcing event in Gurgaon to provide additional global trade opportunities for Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Indian suppliers attending the event will have the opportunity to interact and work with leading retailers from across the world including Target Australia, a retailer for apparel and homeware, Dorel Juvenile Group, a child products provider, Sears Holdings Corporation, a broadline retailer, Auchan Group, a hypermarket chain in France and Kmart, a discount department stores, said a press release.

The day long sourcing event, to be organised on 13 October, 2011, is aimed at providing Indian suppliers with an offline extension of the Alibaba.com online marketplace to promote made-in-India products to the North American, European and Australian markets.

Alibaba.com will host an orientation session to offer Indian SMEs first-hand information about various export markets, while sharing insights on industry and global sourcing trends.

High-quality Alibaba.com Indian supplier members, screened and selected based on pre-defined quality requirements, will also receive the opportunity to interact directly with the international retailers in one-on-one business matching meetings.

“Alibaba.com has always been committed to helping SMEs participate in global trade and stay competitive through the Internet,” Brian Wong, vice president of Global Sales and Service, Alibaba.com.

“The third edition of the India offline sourcing event signifies our recognition of the potential of our Indian supplier members and our continued dedication to bridging them with our community of international buyers,” Wong added.

According to Sandeep Deshpande, country general manager, Alibaba.com India, the country has emerged as a reliable, cost-competitive destination to fulfil the growing sourcing needs of international buyers, and we see that Indian SMEs are instrumental to this development.

“We are hopeful that the availability of opportunities like this sourcing event will make it easier for Indian small suppliers to draw the attention of international traders and retailers, converting potential buyer interest into real orders,” he said.
