NEW DELHI, August 20: AirTel, the cellular operator in Delhi, is extending its
"Smart Roam" international services in the US. Beginning with the states of
Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Kentucky, Smart Roam International will soon be extended to
Boston, New York, New Jersey, Washington and a host of other places.
AirTel services in the US will be available through their tie-up with various leading
cellular service operators there. With over 61 networks under its aegis worldwide,
AirTel's Smart Roam - international services are now available in 38 countries
internationally, including the US, the UK, France, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Taiwan, Netherlands, Australia, Turkey, Spain, Poland, South Africa, UAE, Italy, Austria,
etc. With AirTel's "Smart Roam" cellular, customers traveling out of Delhi or
India will retain the same ten-digit AirTel cellphone number, regardless of their
location.
AirTel in the US will provide this facility on Personal Communication Services (PCS),
operational at 1900 Mhz frequency. PCS is the generic term used to describe the cellular
service that is based on existing GSM and ISDN standards. This facility requires dual/tri
band handsets, which support 1900 Mhz frequency.
