The service provider claims to be the first mobile operator to complete this milestone in Delhi.

“This journey to the two million landmark has been stupendous having achieved this in two years and eight months. Delhi is the first metro to have achieved this number,” chief executive officer, Airtel, Mobile Services, Delhi Circle, K. Srinivas said.

Srinivas said that in the fiscal year 2005-2006, Airtel invested over Rs. 300 crore in Delhi. Airtel currently has over 1600 cell sites in Delhi and the NCR region and plans to increase its number of cell sites by around 50 percent.

“We will deploy a more segmented approach to the market and increase our penetration and preference amongst youth, low-end customers and small and medium enterprises. Investing in the expansion of our state-of-art network and infrastructure facilities will be key focus so as to provide unmatched quality of service and coverage to our customers across Delhi,” Srinivas added.

Executive director, Airtel Mobile Services, Northern Region, Sanjay Nandrajog said that the landmark is a testimony to the quality of services as the circle where mobile telephony in India was born, has achieved the milestone.

“The mobile penetration in Delhi is increasing compared to any other city in India. We are planning focus on network improvement in the year ahead and expecting overwhelming response from the market,” he added. Airtel began its mobile operations from Delhi in September 1995.
