The news has brought joy to millions of Indians, who were questioning the Government of India about the delay in delivering the death sentences to Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru.

Twitteratis are praising Pranab Mukherjee for rejecting the mercy petitions of Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru. ''Thanks Pranab Da! Ur strictness has got us hanging of #kasab 1st! & Now #AfzalGuru ! Gr8! Compliments to fellow Indians! :) Vande Mataram!'' says a tweet from Vivek Pandit.

''So Afzal Guru hanged at 6.25am. Good. This Government has shown more courage than it's given credit for! And thank GoD, Pranab is decisive!'' says Uma Pratap Singh in his tweet.

And, ''I congratulate Pranab Mukherji, narendramodi (for cont pressure on GOI) and all others who effectively contributed to Hanging of Afzal Guru,'' tweets Utpal C Pathak.

However, there are several tweets which imply that the Government of India has vested interests behind this decision. ''Kasab hanged just before winter session.. Afzal guru hanged just before budget session! Coincidence?'' asks noted journalist Rajdeep Sardesai in his tweet.

''Other dudes on death row must be quaking already; thinking if the noose would find their neck as part of 2014 election strategy!'' tweets Debashis Tripathy.

Why Afzal Guru was convicted

Afzal Guru was convicted for his role in the attack on Parliament in 2001. Afzal Guru was given the death sentence by the Supreme Court in 2004. His hanging was scheduled for October 2006, but was stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition. Nine people were killed in the December 2001 parliament attack when five heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists drove into the Parliament complex and opened fire. The terrorists were shot dead.
